Natural B'ham

When most people think “city” they don’t think nature, however there is an abundance of it to be found if you looks.

These are from around Birmingham, Alabama.

Back To School

For the Birmingham School System school starts up again the 8th of August.

For that here are some shots of the newly refurbished Phillips Academy (formerly Phillips High School, formerly Birmingham High School), which will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in just 11 years.

As would be expected, in a building that old, while it has been updated and buffed up, there are still some parts quite a bit less so.

As you can see in the first picture the rooms are bright and ready for students, I only wish the classrooms had been so cheery when I was going to grade school! Back in those long lost days it was more Too Kill a Mocking Bird meets the Shawshank Redemption.

Below that are some shots of the below ground Phillips.

Where water and power and the other needs are a building almost a city block in size are taken care of.

However even this part has been repaired and cleaned up, leaving some areas below the below still like they were close to the start of the structure.

Phillips Academy

Phillips Academy, formerly Phillips High School, formerly Birmingham High School, was built in 1922 and in the years after that has been added to and restored a few times now a K – 8 school it's where I work.
I will be coming back to this a lot.

But just a look at the outside, the mural at the entrance that was painted by the WPA and recently restored, and two brief looks at one room.

PAN SHOT!

The classrooms did NOT look this good when I was a kid.

Lost Streets

Urban areas, and far out in the country aren’t the only places where you can find the old or odd abandoned, neglected or little seen places by the public area.

You can also found them in the suburbs.

High-end ritzy, or formerly rich neighborhoods that have been around for a long time, at least the early 20s, but better if around the turn of the last century, are best for it because they often have these little narrow twisty alleys behind the main houses serve as a place place for servants quarters, carriage houses, personal warehouses (ware-shacks?) or sometimes I you can't tell what, that eventually became garages, little out of the way apartments, and some things that you will still have a hard time figuring out what are, or ever were.

These are a few shots I've taken wandering up and down some of the lost streets, most are found East of the South Side and in the steep hills around Clairmont Avenue.

Looking for an unusual and interesting place for a nice long walk? (and I mean as soon as the temp gets below the melting point of linoleum and the air turns back from an isotope of oxygen to the regular brand) hunt up one of these winding roads.

At the bottom is a link to find more, as well as larger images of these and details about where they are and other things.

And yes that IS an English cab set aside on a back street of Birmingham, Alabama.
